The first level is the Emergency Medical Technician is the EMT Basic. The EMT Basic program is designed as an introductory program and is a prerequisite for the Intermediate and Paramedic programs.
The objective of SouthCoast Trainings EMT Basic program is to provide a program that exceeds the National and State standards. By creating a quality program we provide our students with a solid foundation to build the necessary knowledge and skills to not only become an excellent pre-hospital provider but assist the provider/student in advancing his/her level of care and employment opportunities.
Currently SouthCoast Trainings EMT Basic exceeds the State & National Curriculum Standards. Students who successful complete the EMT Basic program are eligible to take both the Massachusetts and National Registry Certification exams. Most states recognize the National Registry Certification or have some form of reciprocity, allowing individuals from other states certification.
For those seeking Employment the EMT-B program is an introductory program which will allow you to work on a licensed ambulance within Massachusetts and function as a pre hospital provider within a 911 service, a transport service providing transport for patients between hospitals and residents and in some areas may also work in a Hospital’s ED. This certification can aid you in securing a position on a police or fire department. Most fire departments require a minimum EMT certification.
There are only a few Prerequisites for attending the EMT Basic Program. Candidates for the EMT Basic program must be able to read, understand and communicate in English, 18 years of age, free from addiction to alcohol or any drugs. Students must also be free from physical/mental defect/disease which might impair his/her ability to provide emergency care within the scope of the EMTs training & responsibilities, or which might jeopardize the health of another member of the class.
Program Management and student access to course material (handouts, video, exams & quizzes) is done using Evolve ®. Evolve is a course management system by Elsevier that is used along with their EMT Basic textbook. Student will use their home computer/laptop and login to the Evovle® system and have full access to preloaded handouts and extra documents throughout the program. The student will also complete assignments, quizzes and exams online through this same system. All quizzes and exams remain online for our student to use as a study guide.
SouthCoast Trainings EMT Basic Programs Schedule may vary slightly between sights. Currently SouthCoast Training offers both a night and day program at various sites. The average program is a total of 140hours over a 12 week period. In addition to the weekly schedule (two 4hr sessions) there are a few sessions held on either a Saturday or Sunday 9a-5p that are used for the skills portion of the program.
Typical Scheduled:
Night program: Mon/Wed 6p-10p with five Sunday sessions 9a-5p OR Tue/Thu 6p-10p with five Saturday sessions 9a-5p
Day Program: Mon/Wed 9a-1p with five Friday sessions 9a-5p
Applications for the EMT Basic program may be accepted up to the first night of class provided space is available. Seats are filled in the order in which the application was received. Only applications that have the required application fee will be processed. Students may register using our on line registration or print a hard copy from our web site and submit it by mail.
Tuition is due in full on or before the first night of class unless financing is requested by the student at the time of registration. If a student requests Financing, and it is approved, a second payment of $250.00 is due on or before the first night of class. The student would then be required to make weekly payments of $50.00 until the tuition has been paid in full. Being a private school, federal financial aid associated with colleges and universities is not available.
While program design can vary from school to school so can the tuition. There are some schools that will lead you to believe that they don’t use “smoke and mirrors” because they include “all” fees in their tuition. What they don’t tell you is that some of the fees they include such as the certification exam fees are non-refundable. Should you fail to complete/pass their program you may have paid as much as $350.00 to $500.00 that you wouldn’t have had they separated the fees. We believe you should only pay what you get.
SouthCoast Training has a tuition that in most cases includes the text book and HCP CPR. The certification fee is due only AFTER you have passed our program. In the end if you include tuition, certification fees and when applicable college credit fees, the total cost for a SouthCoast Training EMT Basic program can be as much as $200 to $600 lower than other programs.
Qualified students seeking to use VA or MA Unemployment (Work Force) benefits or loan program should submit an application as soon as possible. SouthCoast Training must have an application and fee on file before benefit applications can be submitted to the appropriate agency. Students may Discounts and reduce their tuition in several ways. ($50.00 discount/credit or reimbursement for EACH student they refer that complete his/her tuition. There may also be discounts for groups or tuition paid in full no later than 60 days from the start of class. Returning SouthCoast Training students may receive $1,000.00 off of their Paramedic Tuition should they seek additional training and certification. In most cases this amount is equal to 133% of the Basic Tuition.
When considering attending a program held at a college or university compare tuitions. Most colleges allow student seeking a degree that have become certified elsewhere to pay for the credits only. Normally the total cost of paying for College Credits added to the cost of the tuition from a non-college sponsored program can be as much as $500 less than the cost of attending a college program.
The Certification Process is the same for all schools and colleges in Massachusetts. The state will set a date for the skills portion of the exam. The skills exam is held at OUR SCHOOL with the equipment you have been using and become comfortable. Following the exam the state will notify you of your eligibility to take your written computer based exam. Once completed, you are eligible to work in Massachusetts or take your national certification exam.
