Massachusetts Department of Emergency Medical Services requires that any individual who wishes to teach the didactic (classroom) portion of the EMT Basic program to become certified as an Instructor Coordinator.
While you do not need to be an Instructor Coordinator to teach Advanced Life Support programs it is highly recommended. In fact SouthCoast Training requires that all lead instructors become certified as an Instructor Coordinator, similar certification or equal training and experience.
SouthCoast Training also encourages their assistant instructors to participate in the Instructor Coordinator program to gain insight to the adult learner as well as elevate their skills as an instructor. It will also place them in a good position to become a lead instructor should they desire.
The certification is a two part process.
1. Instructor Coordinator course that is recognized by MA OEMS.
2. Internship of 52 hours sponsored by an training company accredited by MA OEMS.
While each company that offers an Instructor Coordinator course has their own entrance requirements normally a sponsor is not one of them. You should be able to enroll individually. However, once you complete this program, MA OEMS
does require you to participate in a 52 hour internship. At this point this would require you to be affiliated with a training company like SouthCoast Training LLC, who offers the EMT Basic program and would willing to sponsor you. If you are not already a SCT instructor and wish to
become one please contact SouthCoast Training to inquire.
Below is information for providers of the Instructor Coordinator Course. Please contact these companies directly to enroll in their programs. If you are interested in becoming a SouthCoast Training Instructor as part of your internship please contact Kevin Polson at 508-997-9210 or email him
